I love Easter! I especially love all of the Easter treats. This breakable chocolate egg recipe includes surprise Easter candies inside, which makes it double the fun.

Usually, you don’t want to break Easter eggs. However, there is no more enjoyable way to break with tradition than the breakable hallow chocolate egg when you discover the hidden Peeps, jelly bunnies, bubble gum, candy eggs, or other small Easter candies inside. I also made chocolate bunnies to add inside the egg and you will find the recipe below.

Silicone Egg Molds

Another thing I love about this recipe is that it’s another great use for your silicone egg molds. If you question the value of silicone molds dedicated to just one holiday, there are plenty of things you can use them for such as Easter hot chocolate bombs, and even a sweet chocolaty take on deviled eggs, the Chocolate Easter Eggs Stuffed with Frosted Brownie Bites.

A Different Kind of Easter Egg

Easter is such a unique holiday because it is exclusive to springtime and the celebration of associated ideas of renewal and life. It carries huge religious meaning and yet it lacks the season-long anticipation and festivities we give to its winter counterpart. Maybe there is a greater need for celebration in the dead of winter, but I for one embrace the natural warmth and the freshness of spring. With fewer cultural frameworks for Easter, there are a bunch of opportunities to seize your own traditions and create exciting experiences that go beyond your ordinary Easter egg hunt.

A Sealed Shell

These breakable chocolate eggs are made of two halves sealed together. To get the seal, slightly melt the edge of one half by placing it on a heated plate. Once you have your completed eggs stuffed with whatever surprises you choose, you can either decorate them or leave them plain. If you have certain mixes of surprise that you want to make identifiable, make a signature design for each one. This is a good tip if you want to give certain eggs to certain children based on taste. The completed eggs look great in a clear bowl or jar, but you can also present them in a special box or Easter basket.

How Many Chocolate Coats To Apply

One layer of melted chocolate in the silicone egg mold is enough. If you prefer to add two layers, the egg is more difficult for the kids to break and might need your help.

Which Chocolate To Use To Make The Easter Egg And Bunny Lollipops

You can use milk, dark, or semi-sweet chocolate chips, or candy melts/wafers. I prefer the taste of chocolate chips while candy melts are are not actually chocolate. In the culinary world, they are also known as compound coating or confectionery coating.

How To Make The Breakable Chocolate Egg And Fill It With Candies

  1. Use a paper towel or clean kitchen towel and wipe the inside of the silicone mold. This will allow your chocolate mold to have a shiny coat on it.
  2. Using a heat safe bowl, pour into the bowl and place the chocolate chips in the microwave for 30 second intervals. Make sure to stir the chocolate after each 30 seconds until completely melted and smooth.
  3. Using a spoon, spoon about 2 tbsp of the chocolate into the mold. Carefully swirl the chocolate to completely coat the inside of the mold, covering completely in a thick even layer. Add more tablespoon of chocolate if needed.
  4. Lightly shake the mold to remove all bubbles.
  5. Place the coated mold into the fridge for 30 minutes or until it’s set.
  6. If you want the chocolate shell to be thickeryou can add another layer and repeat the process above. However, if you add 2 layers, the egg is more difficult to break. If only applying one later, gently remove chocolate shell from the mold and back away from the hardened chocolate shell.
  7. Carefully place the mold onto the cookie sheet.
  8. If you want to decorate the egg, now is the time. I melted about 1/2 cup chocolate chips and with a pastry bag and tip, I simple added a dot of the melted chocolate to the egg to fix a chocolate chips. You can add sprinkles, candy, and more! Put the half or halves back in the refrigerator side up to chill for about 15 minutes.
  9. Add candy to the inside of half of the egg.
  10. To seal halves together, put a plate in the microwave and heat for 1 minute. Place a chocolate egg half flat side down (the one without the candy) on the hot plate for a few seconds until the chocolate starts to melt.
  11. Gently press the egg half onto the filled egg half to seal. Place in refrigerator to chill for at least 15 minutes.
  12. Serve on a plate or in an Easter decorative box. Give your kids a plastic or wooden mallet to break open their surprise chocolate egg and dig in!
